Later, he attempted a return to professional competition in the 1990s despite a chronic knee injury, culminating in his final tour appearance at the 1997 Nike (Korn Ferry) Tour’s St. Louis Classic. Golf Instruction Career
Doug quickly gained recognition as one of the industry’s top golf instructors, earning a Golf Digest nomination for Top 100 Instructors in America. His innovative teaching method focused on biomechanics, challenging conventional swing theories. He emphasized dominant-side motion and introduced brain typing, a system that identifies a golfer’s psychological and physical tendencies to improve learning and performance. His teachings help simplify complex movements by allowing the arms and club to guide the swing, allowing the body to respond naturally.
Doug has coached over 70 PGA professionals, whose accomplishments include 45 PGA Tour wins. His roster of students includes Hall of Fame athletes, celebrities, and sports icons such as JC Snead, Bruce Fleisher, Jimmy Connors, Kevin Curren, and Dwight Evans. Notably, his work with Bruce Fleisher before the Champions Tour led to Fleisher earning Player of the Year in two of his first three seasons.
